This is a laser cut kit of my own design Gloster Meteor, commonly known as the “Meatbox”.

I have proven out the flying of this aircraft over 5 seasons, and found it to be stable and capable, with a superb presence in the air. Currently, I believe it to be the only PSS Meteor kit in the world!

The airframe is 69″ span (when built with the rounded tips) , and my version weight 10lbs. This does sound a lot, but with an ample win area and a proper slope-focused wing section, she’ll happily fly at coastal sites in 20mph wind, all the way up to 80mph (so far!). The weight could be reduced a bit by using a forward elevator servo and a snake to the bellcrank – all detailed on the plan. My own version uses a single high-torque 9mm thick elevator servo in the tailplane, thus a bit of extra noseweight is required to offset this.

I built my version with split flaps, allowing the landing speed to be reduced somewhat, works well with “crow” settings on the transmitter. Other than that there are of course 2 ailerons, an elevator, and a split rudder as per full size.

The design itself is “scale” – no deviation has been made from high quality 3-views of the full size F3/F4. My version is modelled on a late F3 type with the uprated Derwent engines, as I prefer the shape of the rounded wingtips along with the longer / sleeker engine nacelles. Other versions are drawn on the plan including the later F4, and the twin seat T7.

The model is built entirely from balsa, other than the nacelles which I 3D printed. The plan details them being built from balsa if you wish to stay on the totally traditional route. The nacelles, pilot, seat, gun sight gun ports, instrument panel and seat armour are available as an optional extra.

The plan comes as three large (841×1905) sheets, rolled. The kit is supplied as a short kit with the shaped parts pre-cut i.e. wing ribs and formers, along with a vac formed canopy.
